Elysium or Elysium is the ancient Greek equivalent of paradise, the afterlife where eternal spring reigns and souls spend eternity in carefree joy. For the photographic duo of Evgenia Chapaikina and Ksyusha Smyr, this territory of fantastic, unreally blissful world turns out to be Abkhazia.<\/p>\n

“A project about a place as a set of myths, rituals, legends, epics and religious currents concentrated in one territory and shaping it. The shooting took place in Abkhazia, a partially recognized state whose borders are disputed in an international context. It is understood that the name of this area is not mentioned in the description of the exhibition version of the project. This creates an opportunity for the viewer to perceive the project without the historical and political context.
\nIn the photographs of this series one can find several different approaches to their creation: found landscapes, assembled constructions by the artists and scenes supplemented with mythical symbols, in which the natural element, traces of historical eras, elements of modernity and references to mythical subjects and customs are combined.
\nThe name of the project is related to the name of the place itself. Abkhazia, translated from Abkhazian, is the country of the soul, like Elysium.<\/p>\n
